Thoughtful essay, Dave. (So are good leaders born, not made? Or a combo?) Pete Buttigieg’s book “Trust” is a good, quick read on these issues as well. I think you’d like it.

Ed, that's a good question. I think that there really aren't any born leaders. Leaders are formed in the crucible of life. They have to develop and display competence. They have to form a solid ethical basis for their actions. They have to keep their promises and act with integrity. Put those ingredients to gather and we have a person we can trust. Give that person a compelling vision for a better future, and the ability to tell that story, and you have all of the ingredients for a real leader. That leader will be able t, in David Foster Wallace's words, "...somehow get us to do certain things that deep down we think are good and want to be able to do but usually can't do on our own."
